Bamboo Flooring - Floor City USA

Bamboo flooring can give you the natural beauty of wood in your home without having to feel that your choice in home improvement is having a damaging affect on the environment. Bamboo flooring is a higly sustainable, environmentally friendly product. It's one of nature's greatest gifts to mankind, having been used in many useful ways since the beginning of time. Although bamboo is actually a grass, for many, it has become the "wood" of choice for both decorative and practical applications.

The mention of bamboo floors may conjure up images of uneven strips of cane or round poles which would seem difficult or uncomfortable to walk on if used as a floor. The fact is, this relatively new type of flooring is as flat as any other hardwood or laminate floor as we know it. With the help of recent technological advances, manufacturers are now converting bamboo stalks into high-quality, ultra-smooth flooring on a grand scale in order to meet its fast growing demand.

When properly installed and cared for, bamboo flooring will provide a long-lasting, durable, and beautiful floor that you'll be proud to show off.

Caveat Emptor - "Buyer Beware!"

Bamboo floors, like most products, will have a range of prices from low- to high-end, often times without any discernible differences between the two. However, there are significant differences that unfortunately may become apparent after the installation.

Differences include things like the maturity of the bamboo, the elevation, and the lamination (glue) process. Briefly, the better bamboo will always be that which is grown in higher elevations and harvested when it is more mature, five to seven years. Also, be aware that some manufacturers use environmentally unfriendly adhesives containing formaldehyde during the lamination process. Formaldehyde is classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC) which, when off-gassed from the bamboo and breathed in, could cause significant respiratory problems. Long-term exposure to high levels of formaldehyde has been shown to cause cancer. To some, the presence of high VOCs may not be noticeable, yet to others, it is blatantly apparent and potentially debilitating.
